Columbus man charged with molesting 6-year-old

A Columbus man was arrested on Monday after he was accused of sexually assaulted a 6-year-old, authorities said.

Franklin Smith, 41, faces one count of child molestation. He was booked into the Muscogee County Jail for a 2 p.m. Wednesday hearing in Columbus Recorder’s Court.

Columbus police were called to the Division of Family and Child Services on March 2, 2016 to investigate an incident. A 6-year-old told a school counselor a month before that they were sexually assaulted.

A fugitive squad took Smith into custody on Monday on outstanding warrants stemming from the incident. No further details were given.
