Three burglars stole from students' lockers at Hardaway High, police say

Three people charged with breaking into Hardaway High School early Tuesday were accused of stealing clothes and shoes from the students' lockers, according to testimony Wednesday in Columbus Recorder's Court.

Justice Brice, 21; William Tate, 21; and Jane Watson, 20, were arrested following the burglary that authorities said led to more than $8,000 in damage.

Columbus police were called to Hardaway High School at 2901 College Drive after its security alarm sounded around 3:17 a.m. Tuesday.

Cpl. Emily Tomberlin said she was on the scene with officer Drew Obson when dispatch informed them that a security officer spotted three people outside of the building. They were later identified as Brice, Tate and Watson.

Police found the group moments later inside of the boys' locker room near the gym, which was in disarray. A window was shattered and some lockers were damaged.

Tomberlin said the suspects were holding some clothes and shoes in their arms. They allegedly also had a large screwdriver and gloves. Among the items reported stolen were one book bag, one small black duffle bag, two jackets and two pairs of shoes.

Officials took the co-defendants into custody on the scene.

They allegedly told authorities they walked to the school after being pulled over as passengers in a stolen vehicle. The women said they broke into the building to stay warm, according to police.

Brice and Watson pleaded not guilty to second-degree burglary, second-degree criminal damage to property, possession of burglary tools and loitering. They were booked into the Muscogee County Jail under bonds totaling $14,250.

Judge Julius Hunter bound the case over to Superior Court.

Tate will face the same charges at 8 a.m. Thursday in Columbus Recorder's Court.
