Man shot suspect after he broke into his truck, police say
A homeowner shot a man in the foot after he allegedly caught him breaking into his truck at his Auburn residence, authorities said in a news release.
Corey Heard, 36, faces one count of breaking an entering a motor vehicle. He was treated at East Alabama Medical Center before being booked into the Lee County Jail under bonds totaling $103,000.
Auburn police were called to the 200 block of Lee Road 17 around 2:30 a.m. Sunday to investigate an auto burglary.
The homeowner approached a stranger he saw entering his 2014 Ford Pickup. The suspect allegedly approached the victim in a threatening manner and the homeowner told him to stop several times.
Authorities said the victim fired warning shots and the suspect continued to approach him.
"The victim ordered the suspect to stop several times, fired warning shots and the suspect continued to come towards him," Capt. Lorenza Dorsey said. "The victim eventually fired in the direction of the suspect striking him in the foot after which the suspect retreated."
In separate unrelated incident, Heard was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped by a group of men after running away from a youth development center in October.
