Alabama trooper was trying to stop Columbus woman before fatal crash on U.S. 280

A Columbus woman died Thursday after the SUV she was driving overturned on U.S. 280 while refusing to stop for a trooper near Lee Road 158, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said.

Jana Maire Berry, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2 p.m. crash two miles east of Opelika.

Berry was driving a 2003 GMC Yukon when she refused to stop for an Alabama state trooper. The crash remains under investigation by troopers.

No information was available on whether she was using a seat belt.
