Body of missing Columbus man found in Russell County, sheriff says

Six months after he was reported missing in Columbus, the body of Samuel Hewitt Jr. was found Sunday in Russell County, authorities said.

A 2016 black GMC Sierra driven by the 49-year-old Hewitt also was recovered, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said.

The sheriff couldn’t specify whether there was foul play in connection with the death.

“I expect to do a press conference once I have all the facts and have looked into everything we have recovered,” the sheriff said. “I don’t know. That is tough to say this early.”

The death remains under investigation, the sheriff said. More details may be available during the news conference.

A missing person’s report was filed with the Special Victims Unit of the Columbus Police Department in May.
