Columbus man, 19, dies after shooting in Walgreens parking lot, coroner says

A shooting in the Walgreens parking lot in Wynnton has left a Columbus teen dead just hours before Thanksgiving Day, authorities said Wednesday.

Tommy Jones, 19, of Columbus was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at 6:54 p.m. in the emergency room of Piedmont Columbus Regional midtown campus, said Muscogee County Chief Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley. His body will be transported to the crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy on Friday.

Worley said Columbus police were called at 6:13 p.m. to the drug store parking lot at 2510 Wynnton Road. Jones was transported to the hospital where he died.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Columbus Police Department.

The death is the 30th homicide investigated by the coroner’s office this year, Worley said.
