One teen dead, another wounded in possible gunfight in Lee County

One teen was killed and another wounded in a possible gunfight Tuesday in Lee County near the Russell County border, authorities said.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris identified the teen killed as Kenneth Bryce Davis, 16, of Fort Mitchell, Ala., who was shot multiple times.

Officers were called around 9 p.m. to a residence in the 600 block of Lee Road 307, in the southeastern part of the county, where they found two people on the front porch, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Davis was dead at the scene. The other victim, an 18-year-old from Smiths Station, was wounded and rushed by ambulance to Piedmont Columbus Regional in Columbus, but then airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Harris said.

Neither teen lived where the shooting happened, on the county road that runs north from Phenix City’s Pierce Road off U.S. 280.

Investigators said they found two handguns at the scene.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting was the end result of an altercation between the two males,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651 or 334-737-7150, or the Crimestoppers toll-free tip line at 888-522-7847.

Central student

Phenix City Schools Superintendent Randy Wilkes issued a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding Davis, who was a student at Central High School:

“Phenix City Schools is saddened by the passing of Kenneth “Bryce” Davis and wishes to extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends. Bryce was active in both extra and co-curricular activities, and his loss has greatly affected the Red Devil family,” Wilkes wrote.

“We are mindful that it is not unusual for people to experience many different emotions after such a traumatic event; therefore, counseling has been made available on campus,” he added. “Please continue to remember the Davis family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”

Smiths Station High School posted this message Wednesday to its Facebook page:

“Just to make everyone aware, due to events that took place in the community, SSHS is taking extra precautions to ensure student safety today.”
