Columbus police arrest suspect charged in fatal shooting of Phenix City man

Columbus police have arrested and charged with murder a suspect in the Feb. 9 shooting death of a Phenix City man.

Trey Campbell, 26, was booked into the Muscogee County Jail, the Columbus Police Department announced Monday.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday in Columbus Recorder’s Court.

After police received a call around 8 p.m. Feb. 9 in reference to a person being shot in the 2400 block of Rice Street, they found Shovawn Baker, 34, suffering from a gunshot wound, according to CPD’s news release. Baker was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police also found Campbell with a gunshot wound at the scene. He had surgery at Piedmont and was released, police said.
