Judge sets bond for Columbus man charged in fatal hit and run incident

A Columbus man involved in a hit and run crash a year ago had his first appearance in Recorder’s Court Tuesday.

Eddie Riggins is charged in a Jan. 12, 2019, crash that left 54-year-old Laantoneus Moses dead. The incident occurred at the intersection of Victory Drive and Ticknor Drive in Columbus.

Riggins waived his 8 a.m. appearance but Judge Julius Hunter set his total bond amount to $11,250. He is not allowed to drive while out on bond.

Riggins is accused of hitting Moses and leaving the scene. He hadn’t been spotted for nearly a year until Columbus police released a video of Riggins’ vehicle fleeing the scene, according to a press release sent on Feb. 21. Then tips and information started flowing in to investigators.

Riggins’ full list of charges include:

  • First degree homicide by vehicle.

  • Duty to report accident.

  • Following too closely.

  • Driving with a suspended license.

  • No proof of insurance.

  • Duty to report an accident involving a death (leaving the scene).
