Second suspect arrested in Cusseta Road homicide after being wanted for nearly a month

Columbus police arrested a 23-year-old man Friday and charged him with murder in an April fatal shooting on Cusseta Road.

Jessie Harper was arrested around 11:15 a.m. at a residence on Luna Drive, according to a press release. He had been wanted since May 5 in the shooting that left Quincy Atkins, 20, dead.

The incident happened on Cusseta Road around 5 p.m. April 18. Atkins was found with multiple gunshot wounds after he crashed a Dodge Charger into a house.

Atkins was rushed to the emergency room at Piedmont Columbus Regional where he was later pronounced dead. Harper, along with Tyshaun Sylvester, 23, are believed to be involved in the incident. Sylvester appeared in Recorder’s Court on May 7.

Additional charges are pending in Harper’s case, according to police. He is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court at 8 a.m. May 30 for an initial appearance, but his probable cause hearing will be at 9 a.m. June 3.

Anyone with additional information in the case is asked to contact the Columbus Police Department Homicide Division at 706-653-3400.
