7-year-old girl killed in car crash on Macon Road

A 7-year-old girl is dead following a crash on Macon Road near Forrest Road.

Mariah Lewis was ejected from a vehicle after it crashed. She was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m., said Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton.

Around 8:45 p.m., at least 10 Columbus Police Department cruisers were seen near the intersection. Georgia State Patrol officers were seen arriving around 9:53 p.m.

Starlet Kissam, the wife of a driver struck during the crash, spoke to a Ledger-Enquirer reporter at the scene around 9 p.m. She said her wife was driving down Macon Road when another car sped past and hit the side of her vehicle.

“She tried to move out of the way to avoid (an) accident but there was no way she could’ve,” Kissam said. She spoke to her wife over the phone following the crash and said she urged her to go to the hospital.

At least three vehicles were damaged in the crash, including a black car seen in the middle of the intersection of Macon and Forrest Roads and a red car flipped on its side.

Lewis’ body will be transported Wednesday to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta for an autopsy, Newton said.

Ledger-Enquirer visual journalist Madeleine Cook contributed to this report. This is a breaking news story and will be updated as information comes available.
