Columbus Police investigating homicide near Water Works Park

Columbus Police are investigating a homicide at a park owned by Columbus Water Works.

Homicide detectives responded to reports of an individual being shot just after 7 a.m. Friday morning, Major J.D. Hawk said. The park is located near Veterans Parkway and 18th Street, an area frequented by homeless people.

The victim was identified as 46-year-old Kendrick Young, according to Muscogee County coroner Buddy Bryant. The cause of death, according to Bryant, was multiple gunshot wounds.

Young, according to WRBL, was unhoused.

The Columbus Police Department has leads, but are not naming any suspects so not to jeopardize the investigation, according to Hawk. Corporal Kelly Phillips has been designated as the lead investigator for the case, according to the Columbus Police Department.

The motive is unknown at this time.

Anyone with information regarding the murder is asked to contact Phillips at (706) 225-4391.
