Second arrest made in killing of Montgomery man in Columbus

Columbus police have made a second arrest in the shooting that left a Montgomery man dead near 17th Avenue last week.

Kalaya Sumter, 17, has been charged with murder and armed robbery in the June 22 incident, according to a Columbus Police Department press release. Sumter was booked into the Muscogee County Jail without incident.

Just before 7:30 a.m. on June 22, units from the Columbus Police Department were dispatched to 17th Avenue and Nina Street. Upon arrival, they found 22-year-old Travis Henry with a gunshot wound to the chest. He later died of his injuries.

Police first arrested Terreona Horton, 20, in the case. She had her first appearance in Recorder’s Court on Thursday on charges of murder and armed robbery.

Court testimony revealed that Henry might’ve been lured to the area under false pretenses.

Police expect more arrests in the case.

Sumter’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday. Anyone with any information about Henry’s shooting is asked to call Corporal Sherman Hayes at 706-225-4268.
