Montgomery man charged in fatal overnight shooting, Russell County sheriff says

A Montgomery man is charged with murder after an overnight shooting left one dead, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said at news conference Monday evening.

At 10:37 p.m. Sunday, officers with the Russell County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Candlewood Apartments, on Lloyd Street in Hurtsboro, Ala., in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Aaron Gibbs, 24, of Montgomery, dead from a single gunshot wound inside the apartment.

Witnesses on the scene, including a female resident, told officers that Tracy Cloud Jr., 22, of Montgomery, shot Gibbs. The resident also told officers that Cloud was an ex-boyfriend, police said.

Around 2 a.m., medical personnel from East Alabama Medical Center notified RCSO that Cloud had arrived at the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. While receiving treatment, Cloud told officers that he was shot after being chased by an unknown vehicle while leaving the apartment complex.

Cloud was treated and released to police custody, Taylor said.

Cloud appeared before a Russell County judge Monday where he received no bond for one count of murder. He will remain in Russell County jail awaiting trial.

This is a developing story. We will update when more information is made available.
