Suspect in custody after shooting Muscogee sheriff’s deputy in Phenix City, officials say
A Muscogee County sheriff’s deputy is in stable condition after being shot in the head in Phenix City Thursday morning, authorities said.
Around 5:30 a.m., Phenix City police were called to the area of Sandford Road and Post Ridge Apartments in reference to a shooting. Officers found a car crashed into a guardrail and inside was a man with a gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release from the Phenix City Police Department.
The victim was transported by EMS to Piedmont Columbus Regional for treatment and is in stable condition, the release said.
Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman confirmed the victim is a deputy in his department. The deputy was on his way to work at the time of the shooting.
As they investigated the scene, Phenix City officers discovered a second vehicle that had been involved in a crash near the 1200 block of Sandford Road. The driver then fled the scene on foot, the release said.
The suspect, Jasmine Richardson, 31, of Phenix City, turned himself into Phenix City authorities around 9 a.m. Thursday. He is being held in the Russell County Jail, Countryman said.
