Columbus man, 23, met two juveniles before they killed 16-year-old to steal gun, cops say
The 23-year-old charged with murder in the 2020 shooting of a Columbus teen met with two juvenile suspects before they killed the victim while robbing him of a gun, a detective testified Wednesday.
Video surveillance showed Ahmad Turner Jr. met with the teen suspects at the Wilson Homes apartment complex, 3400 Eighth Ave., before the juveniles followed 16-year-old Lamarion Wright to Belmont Street near Sixth Avenue, Sgt. Donna Baker told Columbus Recorder’s Court Judge Julius Hunter.
The teens confronted Wright there about 3 p.m. on May 22, 2020, and shot him to take a gun he had, Baker said. A 9-millimeter shell casing was found near the body, and one of the teens later sent Turner a Facebook message referencing the incident, she said.
Both the meeting between Turner and the teen suspects and the shooting that followed 30 to 45 minutes later were recorded on video surveillance, the detective said.
A witness who knew Turner later picked his photo from a six-picture lineup, identifying him as the third suspect in the homicide, Baker said.
Police in 2020 arrested Corey Tate, 14, and Nigel Walker, 16, charging them as adults with murder in Wright’s shooting, but authorities did not capture Turner until Sunday, when they found him in Dublin, Georgia. A warrant for his arrest was issued Aug. 13, 2020.
