A suspect has been charged in a fatal shooting Wednesday night outside a Phenix City gas station off U.S. Highway 80.

Briterrin Campbell, 25, of Phenix City, is charged with murder in the death of 27-year-old Anthony Thomas, Phenix City police said in a news release.

They said the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Task Force arrested Campbell around 5:30 p.m. in Columbus, and he was held in the Muscogee County Jail, awaiting extradition.

Thomas was shot multiple times outside the Marathon Service station at 100 Stagecoach Drive, where officers were called around 9:30 p.m., authorities said.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said Thomas was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. Thursday at Piedmont Columbus Regional.
