Suspect who escaped Georgia State Patrol car in Columbus arrested in Talbot County
Talbot County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a suspect who escaped Georgia State Patrol custody by fleeing from a patrol car more than a week ago in Columbus, according to a social media post.
A Georgia State Patrol trooper attempted to pull the suspect, Charles Quintin Barnes, over in Columbus on Sept. 26, and then chased Barnes after he fled. The car chase ended when Barnes crashed his vehicle into the porch of a local church.
The trooper then placed Barnes in his patrol car and went to look for a gun Barnes had reportedly thrown from his vehicle. Barnes was able to escape the car and fled on foot. The GSP did not release Barnes’ identity or description at the time, noting that the trooper could positively identify the suspect.
Eight days later, on Oct. 3, Barnes was arrested in Talbot County after a traffic stop on Butler Highway. Barnes reportedly gave officers a false name. Talbot County deputies found Barnes’ Georgia ID and arrested him, according to a Talbot County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
Barnes has been charged with two counts of felony obstruction, one count of giving false information, one count possession of marijuana and one count of drug related object in Talbot County. It is unclear what, if any, charges Barnes has in Muscogee County.
