A 17-year-old LaGrange, Ga., teenager accidentally, fatally shot himself in the head early Saturday while handling a handgun, police said.

Around 12:50 a.m., LaGrange police were called about a possible shooting at 98 McGhee St. in LaGrange.

When officers arrived, they found the front door of the home open and Cordarius Wortham with a gunshot wound to the head.

Wortham, of 97 Addie St., was unresponsive, police said. When paramedics arrived, they determined he was dead.Police said when they arrived and found Wortham’s body, no one else was at the McGhee Street residence, which is around the corner from Wortham’s home.

An investigation revealed Wortham’s injuries were self-inflicted. Police were able to track down and interview Saturday several witnesses who were there during the accident. They all said Wortham was “improperly handling a handgun” when it accidentally went off.

The teen’s body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy. The handgun was recovered and will be sent to the crime lab for testing.
