Opelika man dies after shooting

An Opelika, Ala., man died Tuesday night after he was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound in the head, police said.

Levi Beard, 53, was found lying in the 1200 block of Monroe Avenue in Opelika around 7:45 p.m. CDT when officers responded to a call about a man who had been shot, Capt. Alan Elkins said. Beard was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. CDT.

A little more than hour after Beard’s death, a 41-year-old Opelika man was at the same hospital with a gunshot wound to his knee, Elkins said.

“We know that he was at the same location at the shooting event,” Elkins said.

Police have a suspect and are now searching for that person.

“I’m optimistic that there will be resolution in this murder and assault,” the captain said.

Beard’s death is the second homicide of the year in Opelika.
