OPELIKA, Ala. — A 91-year-old woman testified Monday that Anthony James Vines, on trial for first-degree rape, had sex with her against her will after bursting into her home early one morning.
Prosecutors claimed that medical evidence will prove Vines is the suspect.
Vines, 43, sat at the defense table in a blue shirt as the woman testified on the first day of trial about what she said happened on Nov. 9, 2008. She had awoken around 6 a.m. that day and was about to make herself breakfast when there was a knock at the door.
The person at her doorstep was Vines, she testified, and he asked if she needed her grass cut. She didn’t, she said.
“That’s when he knocked my door off,” she added.
The suspect broke through a chain that latched her door, knocking her into a nearby chair and hurting her elbow and toe. He then grabbed her and took her to her bedroom.
“He had me under the arms, kind of pushing me in there,” she said. “He sat me down the side of the bed. He pushed me down on the bed.”
Assistant District Attorney Kisha Abercrombie asked what the woman did at that point.
“What could I do, honey?” she replied. “I couldn’t do anything because he was holding me down.”
The trial continues Tuesday.
