Closing arguments in the case begin at 9 a.m. CST March 31:
OPELIKA, Ala. – Anthony James Vines, on trial for rape, testified Tuesday that the sex he had with a 90-year-old woman in November 2008 was consensual.
A doctor who treated the woman shortly after the incident, however, told jurors that it was obvious she hadn’t had sex in some time and that “She very quickly decided that if she was going to get through it, she was going to not resist.”
Vines, 43, told jurors that the woman, now 91, asked him to come by her Opelika home to do some work. She opened the door, let him inside and then went to her bedroom while he waited in the front room.
“Then she called me to the back,” Vines testified. “She was just laying on the bed, playing with her gown and everything. I asked her how old she was, but she told me not to worry about that. She initiated the act, as far as having sex.”
Vines’ testimony conflicts with the woman’s, who said Monday that Vines dragged her to her bedroom and raped her.
