Father, son ordered by federal court to pay IRS more than $500K

A father and son accused of failing to pay the IRS thousands of dollars in taxes were sentenced on Tuesday and ordered to pay back more than $500,000, court officials said.

Edward Griffin Sr. and Edward Griffin Jr. both pleaded guilty in July to one count each of failure to pay over withholding and FICA taxes. Prosecutors dropped other charges against them, a release states.

On Tuesday, Edward Griffin Sr. was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay the Internal Revenue Service $367,526.47.

Edward Griffin Jr. was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison and ordered to pay the IRS $148,705.68, a release states.

According to Griffin Sr.’s indictment, he collected more than $86,000 in taxes from employees at three different businesses in 2004 and 2005 and failed to pay the Internal Revenue Service the money it was owed.

Griffin Jr.’s indictment states that he collected more than $42,000 in taxes from employees at two different businesses in 2004 and 2005 and failed to pay the IRS its money.
