Football game rescheduled as Muscogee County schools mourn student shot getting off bus
A crisis intervention team is helping a Muscogee County school grieve the loss of one of its students the day after a 15-year-old was shot dead at a Columbus bus stop, and the school’s football game has been rescheduled.
The Columbus Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting that happened after school Thursday in the 2300 block of Watkins Drive and left Earkavion Lee dead, according to investigators.
In a news release Friday morning, Muscogee County School District communications director Kimberly Wright said Earkavion was a freshman at Kendrick High School.
Wright said MCSD “mourns the tragic loss of one of our students.” She called the incident “senseless gun violence.”
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire school community during this incredibly difficult time.”
MCSD’s crisis intervention team comprises trained professionals who help address the emotional needs of students, parents and staff. School counselors also are available to assist, Wright said.
“The safety and well-being of our students are always our top priorities,” she said. “We are confident that the Columbus Police Department will continue its thorough investigation into this matter, and we ask for respect and privacy for the family at this time.”
Kendrick football game rescheduled
Friday afternoon, MCSD athletics director Jeff Battles announced that Kendrick’s football game against Hardaway, initially scheduled for Friday night at Odis Spencer Stadium, has been moved to a “neutral location” and a different date.
The game now is scheduled for Saturday at noon in Kinnett Stadium. The gates will open for spectators at 11:15 am.
“We encourage fans to attend and support both teams with unity and respect,” Battles said in the news release, “as we remain dedicated to providing a safe and positive atmosphere for everyone.”
MCSD decided to reschedule the game, Battles said, after consulting with local law enforcement.
“This decision, made after careful consideration of the safety and well-being of our students, families, and community members, reflects our commitment to ensuring the best possible environment for all involved,” he said.
Columbus police: arrest made
CPD was leading the investigation into the shooting, officials said. Investigators said Friday that one suspect was charged and other arrested were expected. Roannil Clanton was charged with murder and assault.
Police have asked anyone with information about this shooting to call 911 or 706-225-3161.
Coroner Buddy Bryan said Lee was the half-brother of 18-year-old Earkus Porter Jr., who died after being found shot in Belvedere Park in February, the Ledger-Enquirer reported.
