Columbus police officer struck by fleeing motorist

A Columbus police officer was taken to The Medical Center early today after he was struck by a man fleeing from police on J.R. Allen Parkway.

Officer Jason Swails, 37, was taken to the hospital by ambulance, treated in the emergency room and released after the 5:15 a.m. assault. Swails and another police officer stopped a motorist in a Ford F-150 pickup on J.R. Allen near Veterans Parkway on a possible theft. A struggle ensued when officers tried to take the man into custody.

In his attempt to flee, the man struck Swails with his vehicle.

Columbus police detectives are searching for the driver who struck the officer and fled.
