Virginia trucker dies in collision on I-85 in Auburn

A 61-year-old Virginia man was killed Friday afternoon when the tractor-trailer he was driving collided with the rear end of another big rig on Interstate 85 in Auburn, Ala.

Nathaniel Cain was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma at 2:15 p.m. CST at the scene of the accident, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris. It took Auburn fire rescue personnel more than an hour to free him from the wreckage.

Two passengers in Cain’s vehicle were taken to East Alabama Medical Center’s emergency room for treatment. Cain apparently was traveling northbound on I-85 as traffic slowed in both lanes to avoid an accident. Cain struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, crashed into a guard rail and left the roadway.

The truck’s cab was knocked from the chassis and pinned Cain inside. The other truck driver was not injured.

Traffic was slowed on the interstate for hours until the wreckage was cleared. A investigation into the accident continues by the Auburn Police Department and the coroner’s office.
