Woman released on $250,000 bond in murder-for-hire capital case

Lisa Graham, the woman accused of hiring a hit man to kill her 20-year-old daughter and whose capital murder trial ended in a mistrial in September, was freed Thursday from the Russell County Jail.

“We are glad to have her home after five and a half years,” a relative said Friday, citing a gag order still in force on the case.

Graham, 45, was released about 6 p.m. after the family was able to secure a lower $250,000 bond which was reduced from the original $2 million.

Graham had been jailed on a capital murder charge since her July 2007 arrest in the death of her daughter, Shea Graham. The woman’s body was found with multiple gunshots off a rural road off Alabama Highway 165.

Kenneth Walton, an employee in the family business, also was charged with capital murder but pleaded guilty in June to shooting the Shea Graham.

At Graham’s trial in September, Judge George R. Greene abruptly declared a mistrial, citing health issues as the third day of testimony was set to begin.

Under the terms of Graham’s release, she must live at her mother’s home in Ladonia, is prohibited from leaving Russell County, must not have contact with other witnesses in the case and she must wear an ankle monitoring bracelet. A Lee County judge has set a trial date for June 22.

The relative said the family is aware the case is not over as they seek peace. “We don’t know what’s going to happen now other than we got her out on bond,” the relative said. “We don’t know if there is going to be a monkey show out here for five years. At least she is not behind bars.”

Since leaving the jail, Graham has been calm and glad to be out. “We are just happy to have her home,” the relative said.

The relative noted the changes the family has endured since Graham was charged in her daughter’s death.

“Five and half years of this is five and half years too long,” the relative said. “They put this family through a living hell. Her son is five half years older and we need to put an end to all of it where we can get some peace in our life.”
