Boy, 3, dies Sunday after being struck by car in Opelika

A three-year old boy who was struck by a vehicle in Opelika, Ala., Saturday died Sunday morning.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said the child died at 6:25 a.m in the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Egleston.

The boy was struck by the vehicle on Samford Court in Opelika around 2:30 p.m. He was suffering from serious multiple injuries.

Also found at the scene where the child was struck by the vehicle was a 31-year-old woman whom Opelika police say was assaulted.

She was flown to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus.

Harris said the condition of the woman is unknown at this time.

It is not known if there is a connection between what happened to the boy and the woman.

The names of those involved are not being released at this time as Opelika Police are still early on in the investigation to determine exactly what the circumstance are that led to the incident.

The child has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Montgomery for a postmortem examination.
