Officer hit by vehicle while responding to reported shoplifting

A 30-year-old Columbus police officer was allegedly struck by a blue 1998 Mercury Sable outside of Walmart while responding to a shoplifting report, according to the Columbus Police Department.

The officer had minor injuries, including redness and swelling, stemming from the incident in the 2800 block of Airport Thruway, but no medical treatment was required, an officer said.

The offense happened while police were responding to a Friday call at about 6:30 p.m. referring to an ongoing shoplifting, police said in a report.

During the alleged theft, Robert Lewis David, a 46-year-old man, reportedly made an unlawful entry into the south front door of the store Friday and took one pack of men's boxers valued at $18.46 at about 6:30 p.m., reports show.

Police have not yet identified the driver of the vehicle they believe struck the officer, the report shows.

Both incidents are under investigation.
