Man accused of attempted rape outside Columbus club

Update: Suspect Doug Heinzelman pleaded not guilty to attempted rape and aggravated battery during Recorder's Court Monday morning. He was issued bonds totaling $75,000 and ordered to return to the Muscogee County Jail.

The case was bound over to Superior Court.

Original Story: Columbus police have arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with the attempted rape of a woman early Saturday morning.

According to the police report, Doug Heinzelman, a welder, who gave a Fortson, Ga. address, attempted to rape a 54-year-old Columbus woman outside of Outlaws Saloon at 6499 Veterans Parkway.

The woman was injured and went to Midtown Medical Center for treatment. An ambulance was not needed.

The incident happened at 1:45 a.m.

The woman told officers she didn't know Heinzelman.

According to the arrest report, Heinzelman, who was also charged with aggravated battery, suffered minor injuries from an altercation with a man on the scene and was taken to Midtown Medical Center for treatment.

The man also suffered injuries including having a finger badly bitten by Heinzelman. He went to Midtown Medical Center for treatment.

Heinzelman is expected to appear in Columbus Recorder's Court Monday at 8 a.m.
