BMW catches fire moments after it's parked near South Lumpkin Road

A 29-year-old woman says her black 2001 BMW 325i caught fire after she parked it at the Hampton Inn hotel on South Lumpkin Road, Columbus police said.

She wasn't injured, but her vehicle and the parking lot where the incident happened has $500 worth of extensive property damage, officials said.

Officials say the Columbus woman was traveling south on Fort Benning Road when smoke began to emerge from the vent on the passenger side of her BMW. She drove the car to the hotel parking lot in the 2800 block of South Lumpkin Road, where it caught fire around 1:20 p.m. and continued to burn, according to reports.

Police said they were called to the scene at 2:14 p.m. in response to the car fire, but officials did not reveal the cause of the fire in the initial report.
