A 24-year-old Salem, Alabama, man died Tuesday night in a motorcycle crash while being chased by a Russell County Sheriff’s Office deputy driving into Lee County, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced Wednesday in a news release.

Caleb T. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash that occurred at 9:18 p.m. The 2021 Honda CBR1000 motorcycle he was driving left the road on Lee County Route 401 and struck a tree, approximately 6 miles south of Salem, according to the news release.

Brown was trying to elude a Russell County deputy, the news release says but doesn’t say why the chase started. ALEA Lt. Jeremy Burkett told the Ledger-Enquirer the reason for the pursuit isn’t available for public disclosure while ALEA investigates the incident.
