A 5-year-old Auburn girl died from aggravated child abuse at UAB Children's Hospital Monday evening, according to Auburn police.
Officials said they arrested the victim's stepfather, 34-year-old George W. Barton, on charges of first-degree domestic violence and aggravated child abuse after taking him in for questioning. Police said they are seeking felony arrest warrants against Barton for capital murder.
Police said Barton is in custody in the Lee County Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond.
At approximately noon on Sunday, Auburn police officers responded to a call to assist emergency medical technicians in the 1900 block of Rosie Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they found 5-year-old Caley Presley unresponsive with apparent head trauma.
She was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center emergency room and later sent to the UAB Children's Hospital.
Presley was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. by Nathan Swinger, a physician in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children's Hospital. She will be transported to the medical examiner's office in Montgomery for an autopsy, according to a report.
