Monday’s shooting at a Phenix City apartment complex has become a homicide investigation.

Princeton Kelly, 30, died Thursday night in the intensive care unit of Piedmont Columbus Regional’s midtown Columbus hospital, Russell County coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. told the Ledger-Enquirer in a text message Friday.

An autopsy on Kelly’s body will be performed at the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery to determine the official cause of death, he said.

The Ledger-Enquirer reported Tuesday that the Phenix City Police Department received a call around 8:35 p.m. Monday about a shooting at the Frederick Douglas Apartments in the area of 1500 11th Ave., where officers found Kelly suffering from a gunshot wound.

Kelly was transported to Piedmont with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Capt. Skip Lassiter, the PCPD spokesman, declined to release further details about the shooting.

“This is still an ongoing investigation,” he told the Ledger-Enquirer in an email Friday. “Anyone with information is asked to call the police department, (334-298-0611).”
