Columbus woman charged with murder after man dies of stab wounds
A Columbus woman has been charged with murder after a stabbing this month.
The Columbus Police Department added the murder charge against Shamone Huggins, 28, after Nigel Holmes, 33, died Dec. 14 from his injuries while hospitalized, CPD announced Friday.
The case was reassigned to CPD’s Violent Crimes Unit.
“Following additional interviews and collaboration with the Medical Examiner’s Office, the charge against Huggins was upgraded to murder,” CPD public information officer Brittany Santiago wrote in a news release. “An additional charge of possession of a knife during the commission of a crime was also added.”
Asked for the relationship between the suspect and the victim, Santiago told the Ledger-Enquirer that Huggins was Holmes’ girlfriend.
Huggins was served with the upgraded charges while in custody at the Muscogee County Jail. She is scheduled for a hearing in Recorder’s Court at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 2.
According to CPD, around 4:40 p.m. Dec. 3, officers responded to the 3900 block of Trask Drive in reference to a stabbing and located the victim. EMS transported the victim to Piedmont Columbus Regional.
Initial investigations revealed that Holmes had been involved in a dispute with Huggins. The dispute escalated and Holmes was stabbed, the news release stated.
Officers arrested Huggins that day. She initially was charged with aggravated assault.
