Suspect shot in Columbus officer-involved shooting released from hospital and arrested

TNS

A suspect who was shot in a Columbus officer-involved shooting has been arrested, the Columbus Police Department confirmed Friday.

CPD public information officer Brittany Santiago told the Ledger-Enquirer that Jacob Kyle Brannon, 25, has been released from the hospital and arrested on multiple charges.

Santiago said those charges include one count of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and one count of obstruction.

Columbus police responded at 1:18 a.m. Feb. 6 to the area of 42nd Street and Lakewood Drive to a reported domestic dispute, police said.

Police said a male suspect fired shots at an officer upon the police arriving. The officer returned fire to neutralize the threat, the news release says. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead on the investigation.

A news release on the GBI’s website identified Brannon as the suspect. The GBI said Brannon was shot and injured in the incident.

The GBI said Brannon ran away from the scene when an officer arrived and shot at the officer with a handgun while running away. The officer returned fire and struck Brannon multiple times, according to the GBI.

The name of the officer hasn’t been released.

When asked for the officer’s name and experience, CPD referred the Ledger-Enquirer to the GBI. The Ledger-Enquirer has filed an open-records request with the GBI for this information and hadn’t received a response at the time of publication.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay, police said.

The GBI asks anyone with information about this incident to call the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Columbus at 706-565-7888.
