A Columbus man who allegedly raped a woman in a residence near Infantry Drive made his first court appearance in the case early this morning.
Jeff Hinton, the 45-year-old suspect, pleaded not guilty to the rape, simple battery and criminal trespassing in Recorder's Court. He was placed in the Muscogee County Jail under a $3,000 bond.
The case was bound over to Superior Court.
Columbus Police said they were called to a residence less than a mile away from Infantry Drive around 2:28 a.m. Saturday in reference to a rape.
A criminal investigation into the incident revealed that Hinton allegedly slapped the woman, held her down and raped her in her bedroom between 11 p.m. Friday and 2:18 a.m. Saturday.
At some point during the incident, Hinton reportedly caused $200 worth of property damage.
He was arrested on the scene, officials said.
Authorities said the victim didn't have any noticeable injuries following the attack, but she was wounded. She transported herself to the Midtown Medical Center, where she was listed in fair condition, police said.
A police report indicates that the victim and suspect knew each other prior to the incident.
