Fort Mitchell man dies in car crash after chase involving Phenix City police
A Fort Mitchell man is dead after a Monday car chase involving the Phenix City Police Department, according to a news release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
ALEA said the single-vehicle crash happened around 5:28 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Fontaine Road and Sixth Place South, about six miles north of Fort Mitchell.
ALEA identified the victim as 23-year-old Trevor L. Woods. The 2015 Dodge Challenger that Woods was driving left the road, struck a tree and overturned, according to ALEA.
Woods was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and died at the scene, ALEA said.
A PCPD officer was patrolling around 6:10 p.m. Monday in the area of Seale Road and Fourth Place in Phenix City when the officer observed two vehicles turn off Fourth Place at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly, according to a news release from PCPD.
The release says the officer tried to catch up with the vehicles to make a traffic stop when the vehicles split in different directions.
The officer attempted to catch up with the red Dodge Challenger, which then accelerated to flee from the officer, according to the release.
A witness said they observed the two vehicles racing moments before the officer came into contact with them, according to the release.
ALEA is handling the crash investigation, according to the release.
