Phenix City mom arrested, charged with attempted murder involving infant daughter
A Phenix City woman was arrested Monday and charged with attempted murder in an incident involving her infant daughter, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Mireira Johana Garcia Lucero, 28, also faces a charge of torture and willful abuse of a child, according to a news release.
The LCSO said officers received a 911 call around 12:38 a.m. about a mother attempting to smother her 4-month-old daughter.
Deputies responded about eight minutes after the call to the 200 block of Lee Road 212, which is in Phenix City, according to the news release.
The news release says deputies contacted several people who said Lucero was trying to suffocate her baby.
Witnesses said they observed Lucero choke and shake the baby to get the child to stop crying, according to the LCSO.
The news release says the infant was transported to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus to be medically assessed.
“At the time of transport, the baby was alert and seemed to be in good health,” the news release says.
Lucero is being held in the Lee County Jail on an $85,000 bond, according to the LCSO.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information on the case to contact them at 334-749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
Editor’s note: This story was updated after the Lee County Sheriff’s Office clarified it has misspelled Lucero’s name in a news release.
