Muscogee County School District assistant principal charged with felony theft

A Muscogee County School District administrator has been arrested and criminally charged.

Shedrick William Crafton, 32, the assistant principal at Hannan Magnet Academy, according to its website, was arrested and charged Nov. 16 with two counts of theft by taking, a Columbus Police Department report shows.

The alleged incidents happened in May, but he wasn’t arrested until six months later, when a Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped him on Interstate 185 for a traffic violation, according to CPD’s report.

While conducting a criminal background check, the deputy discovered Crafton was wanted by CPD. The deputy requested a CPD officer to handle the extradition. The responding officer took Crafton into custody and transported him to the Muscogee County Jail without incident, the report says.

The thefts allegedly happened May 14 (misdemeanor) and May 20 (felony) at a “specialty store” not named in the report and identified by only the victim’s address: 1591 Bradley Park Drive. That’s where the Bradley Park Crossing shopping center comprises more than a dozen businesses.

Muscogee County court records show Crafton’s case remains open. During a preliminary hearing Nov. 17 in Columbus Recorder’s Court, his case was bound over to Superior Court, and he posted a bond of $5,000.

Shedrick Crafton’s background

Crafton was appointed assistant principal of Hannan, an elementary school, in December 2024. According to a copy of his resume, which was attached to the agenda for that month’s MCSD board meeting, Crafton has worked in MCSD for seven years. His previous positions are:

  • 2018-19, special-education teacher at East Columbus Magnet Academy, a middle school
  • 2019-22, special-education teacher at Key Elementary School
  • 2022-24, dean at Key.

Crafton earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Columbus State University in 2018, a master’s degree in special education from CSU in 2021 and leadership certification from the University of West Georgia in 2023, according to his resume.

The Ledger-Enquirer didn’t reach Crafton or his lawyer before publication.

MCSD’s response

In response to the L-E’s questions, MCSD communications director Kimberly Wright said in an email Friday, “The charges are related to a part-time job of Mr. Crafton’s, not MCSD.”

Wright didn’t answer the L-E’s questions about Crafton’s employment status and who is Hannan’s assistant principal now.

“Appropriate personnel action was taken in November pending an investigation,” she said. “MCSD will continue to monitor the situation and will cooperate with law enforcement as needed. Personnel matters are handled in accordance with district policy and applicable law. . . . At this time, no further information is available.”
