Owner charged with 16 felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty in Lee County
An Opelika man was arrested and charged with 16 felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
Bond for Mose Washington Jr., 65, was set at $80,000.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was contacted Saturday evening in reference to possible animal cruelty in the 1700 block of Lee Road 400 in Beauregard, according to the LCSO.
“Deputies responded and located approximately 16 dogs that appeared to be malnourished and did not have access to food and water,” according to a news release.
After investigators obtained a search warrant for the property, 16 dogs that appeared to be pit bulls were seized and transported by Lee County Animal Control to a veterinary clinic in Opelika for evaluation, according to the LCSO.
Sunday, the veterinarian told investigators all the dogs were in poor health and apparently had not been cared for on a regular basis, the LCSO said. As a result, Washington, the owner of the dogs, was arrested.
The LCSO asks anyone with information about the case to call the sheriff’s office at 334-749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
