16-year-old charged as an adult in fatal shooting of Columbus teen in LaGrange

A teenager is in custody and charged in the shooting death of a Columbus teen in LaGrange.

The LaGrange Police Department announced Tuesday night a 16-year-old was arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during certain crimes after Marshawn Bailey, 18, died from his injuries that afternoon.

The Ledger-Enquirer doesn’t publish the names of juvenile crime suspects.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, according to LPD. Although charged as an adult, he was taken to a youth detention facility due to his age, police said.

Details about murder of Marshawn Bailey

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, LPD officers responded to a call about a person who had been shot at the Tall Pines Apartments, 150 Turner St.

Officers found Bailey suffering from a gunshot wound. They rendered aid until personnel from the LaGrange Fire Department and Troup County AMR arrived, according to LPD.

Bailey was transported to a medical facility in Columbus. At approximately 1:30 p.m., detectives were notified he had died from his injuries, and the suspect was arrested around 7 p.m., police said.

“The investigation remains ongoing,” the news release says, “and anyone with information pertaining to this investigation is encouraged to contact Detective K. Scott at 706-883-2620.”
