Troup County cold case results in woman’s 80-count indictment in girlfriend’s murder

A 19-year-old cold case in Troup County has resulted in an 80-count indictment, including murder.

Angel Marie Thompson, who was arrested in 2024 after allegedly concealing the death of Nicole Alston, whose remains were found in 2007 in Troup County, was indicted in Fulton County, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

The grand jury’s indictment includes criminal charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, concealing a death and dozens of counts related to fraud and identity theft.

The sheriff’s office got a break in the cold case after receiving word in 2023 that DNA from evidence matched the remains of Alston, 24, whose last known residence was in New York City., according to the TCSO.

“After a detailed investigation, Thompson was arrested, and the case continued and was transferred to Fulton County, where most of the crimes occurred,” the news release stated. “Because of the great work of our cold case investigator, Investigator Clay Bryant, Capt. Kelli Ellington and Sandy Springs Police, the case now moves forward in the Fulton County Superior Court for prosecution.”

In last year’s Facebook post announcing the murder charges against Thompson, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office identified Alston as Thompson’s girlfriend.

“Alston’s partial remains were found inside a burning black bag dumped along a road in Troup County, Georgia,” the post says. “District Attorney Fani T. Willis called the case one of the most gruesome she’s ever seen in her 29-year career.”
