4-year-old girl shot in head. Phenix City police arrest man on attempted murder

Phenix City police arrested a man Monday on five counts of attempted murder.

Youhan Jones Jr. also was charged with one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling, the Phenix City Police Department said in a news release.

Police responded to a call Sunday in reference to a shooting at Whispering Pines Apartments, 1200 12th St., where officers found a 4-year-old girl had been shot in the head while she slept, PCPD said.

“The offender was identified as Youhan Jones Jr.,” the news release says. “Youhan Jones Jr. was reportedly in a dating relationship with the child’s mother. The residence was also occupied by four other victims during the shooting, which included two more children. No one else was injured in the incident.”

The news release doesn’t mention the condition of the 4-year-old girl, but PCPD Capt. Robert Isabel told the Ledger-Enquirer she is hospitalized and in stable condition.

While police investigated the case and searched for Jones, they arrested two people for helping him elude them. PCPD charged Vantasia Mayes, a friend of Jones, and Stephanie Ward, his mother, with first-degree hindering prosecution, according to the news release.

PCPD requests anyone with further information to call Investigor Jakes at 334-448-2798 or Investigator Anglin at 334-448-2839.
