Woman was found dead on roadside. Russell County jury delivers verdict in murder trial

A man was found guilty April 10 of murder in the 2022 death of a woman in Phenix City, according to Russell County District Attorney Rick Chancey.

Chancey said defendant Jason Cole, 44, was found guilty of murder by a Russell County jury in the death of 41-year-old Rachael Mixson.

Responding Phenix City Police Department officers found Mixson dead on the side of Cutrate Road in Phenix City.

Cole was also found guilty on the charge of abuse of a corpse for his treatment of Mixson’s body, according to Chancey.

Chancey said the case was investigated by Sgt. Issan Duke and Sgt. Jose Silva of the PCPD.

The case was tried by Assistant District Attorneys Malory Hatfield and Lauren Brown, according to Chancey.

Chancey said it was determined Mixson was killed by blunt-force head trauma and strangulation by Cole, who was her boyfriend at the time.

“The district attorney extends appreciation to the entire PCPD for their hard work in solving this horrific crime, and especially to FBI Special Agent Jay Berni, for whose cellphone location data and testimony was essential to the successful prosecution of the case,” Chancey said.

Sentencing before Judge A. David Johnson is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on May 22.
