Man shot in Phenix City dies in Columbus hospital, Russell County coroner says

A man died Sunday morning in a Columbus hospital after a weekend shooting in Phenix City, according to Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr.

Sumbry said Timothy Harris, 33, was pronounced dead at 9:12 a.m. Sunday from a fatal gunshot wound after an altercation with a family member.

The shooting occurred at a residence on Old State Dock Road, according to Sumbry.

Sumbry said Harris’ body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery for an autopsy.

The Phenix City Police Department said officers responded Sunday to Old State Road in reference to a shooting, where they found Harris suffering from two gunshot wounds.

Police said a family member of Harris’ was administering life-saving measures to Harris when officers arrived.

That family member was identified as a person of interest in the case and was interviewed along with several other witnesses by investigators, according to police.

“The case is still an active investigation,” the PCPD news release says. “Like all major cases, this case will be presented before a Russell County Grand Jury.”

Police ask anyone with information about the case to call Investigator Jakes at 334-448-2798 or Lt. Anglin at 334-448-2839.
