Columbus police update condition of K-9 Havoc, wounded in officer-involved shooting

The Columbus Police Department has updated the condition of the K-9 Unit dog wounded during Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting that killed the Dollar General homicide suspect and injured a police officer.

“K-9 Havoc finally got to see his best friend again,” CPD said on its Facebook page Thursday.

That best friend is his handler, CPD Cpl. Brent Wilson, who “waited patiently until he could finally see his partner,” the post says. “It did both of their hearts some good to be reunited.”

Havoc was shot in the front left leg, which was broken, CPD public information officer Brittany Santiago told the Ledger-Enquirer. During the four-hour surgery,“there was some bone fragment, and they put in a plate to preserve that fragment,” she said.

The surgery “went better than expected,” the post says. “He still has some recovery to do, but he’s one tough K-9.”

Wilson isn’t the CPD officer who was wounded during the shootout, treated at a hospital and released.

“That officer is taking things day by day,” the post says, “and he’s doing well.”

CPD added, “Havoc took the brunt of the injuries that day. Without question, his actions helped protect the officers beside him.

“We cannot thank the team at Auburn Veterinary Hospital enough for the care they’ve given Havoc. We know he’s in the best hands, and we’re grateful for everything they’re doing to help our boy heal.

“… Thank you for the prayers, kind words, and support you’ve shown Havoc, Cpl. Wilson, the injured officer, and all of #TeamCPD.”

The post had received more than 7,700 likes, 529 comments and shares as of 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Three Dog Bakery in Columbus is selling cookies made in honor of Havoc. Proceeds will help pay for Havoc’s recovery, franchise co-owner Tracy St. John told the L-E.
