The mother of a 19-month-old boy who was shot in the right arm Wednesday faces a reckless conduct charge in connection with the shooting at Elizabeth Canty Apartments.

Dakina Fortson, 20, also was charged with giving a false report of a crime based on her initials statements to police.

She will face the two charges during a 9 a.m. hearing today in Columbus Recorder's Court.

The woman's son sustained gunshot to the right hand in the 6:35 p.m. shooting at 201 20th Ave.

The boy was treated at Midtown Medical Center where he was in good condition.

Police said officers were called to the 805 Building at the public housing complex to check on a shooting.

Fortson first told police that her son was shot by an unknown gunman in a black Honda with tinted windows in front of the building while she was watching the boy and her 5-year-old.

A further investigation revealed the shooting occurred inside the apartment.

The suspect gave police false information about the Honda.

She later admitted the 5-year-old was playing with a gun and accidentally shot the boy in the right finger.

Fortson was arrested at 9:15 p.m. at the Public Safety Center.
