Authorities said they are currently conducting a death investigation into what they believe was likely an accidental Auburn shooting.

Auburn Police said Marquorious Jurrell Rowell, 18, was transported to East Alabama Medical Center Medical Center with an apparent gunshot wound following the Saturday afternoon incident.

Rowell of Auburn was pronounced dead later that day at 4:23 p.m., and his body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Montgomery for an autopsy, according to a press release.

Authorities said they responded to the 400 Block of Webster Road around 3:40 p.m. Saturday to check on a reported shooting.

Police said they found Rowell wounded and unresponsive in the residence and a juvenile on the scene.

Officers identified the juvenile as the shooter and transported the individual away from the scene, according to the release. He was not arrested or charged, police clarified.

"The preliminary investigation indicates the likelihood of the victim being shot accidentally when a firearm was inadvertently discharged inside the residence," police stated. "The investigation is, however, ongoing."

The Alabama Department of Forensic, the State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Lee County Coroner’s Office are assisting Auburn police in the death investigation.
