A Fort Benning soldier accused of exposing himself on Jan. 22 to a 27-year-old woman on Macon Road was charged with four additional counts on Wednesday for similar incidents in Columbus, police said.
Staff Sgt. Blakely Patrick Griffin, assigned to the 198th Infantry Brigade on post, was arrested at 3:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Center on four counts of public indecency and transported to the Muscogee County Jail. He was later released on bonds totaling more than $1,000 and the charges were bound over to State Court.
Police Lt. Joyce Dent-Fitzpatrick said the military uniform and car’s description were noted in the new cases. On Jan. 22, the woman said she was near the Chuck E. Cheese’s when a man in a new car asked her for directions to Fort Benning. As she walked near his car, the woman said the man was partially nude from the waist down and masturbating.
Similar cases have been filed since Nov. 6, 2015, in Columbus. A 32-year-old woman told police a man exposed himself to her at the intersection of Boxwood Boulevard and Midtown Drive.
Three days later, a woman said a man was parked next to her at Publix in the Cross Country Plaza at 3201 Macon Road. He was watching pornography on his cellphone and masturbating.
In a Jan. 10 report, police said a man was parked near a 31-year-old woman at the Wal-Mart on Buena Vista Road performing similar acts.
A 34-year-old woman filed a delayed report on Jan. 28 in connection with a December incident at the InstaLoan at 3649 Victory Drive. The man asked for directions from the woman while performing a sex act.
Dent-Fitzpatrick said records show the woman called police to report an incident that day but left before they arrived.
“They called police but couldn’t wait until police arrived,” she said. “We got history that she did call.”
Monica Manganaro, a public affairs spokeswoman for the Maneuver Center of Excellence on post, said a separate investigation is pending on post but Griffin is continuing to work until the Columbus case is considered.
